Humanin is a small mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) consisting of 24 amino acids. It was first identified in 2001 as a neuroprotective factor that can prevent neuronal cell death caused by various Alzheimer's disease-related insults. Unlike proteins encoded by nuclear DNA, Humanin is encoded by a gene within the mitochondrial genome. This unique origin points to its specialized role in mitochondrial function and cellular stress responses. Humanin is found endogenously in various tissues and bodily fluids, including the brain, heart, muscle, and blood. Its levels can vary with age and disease states.
