Overview
PEG-MGF, or PEGylated Mechano Growth Factor, is a synthetic peptide derived from the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) gene. It is a modified form of Mechano Growth Factor (MGF), which is an isoform of IGF-1 produced in response to mechanical stress, such as resistance exercise. The 'PEGylated' part refers to the addition of polyethylene glycol chains to the MGF molecule. This process, known as PEGylation, is often used in pharmaceuticals to prolong a compound's half-life in the body and potentially improve its stability and bioavailability by reducing its degradation by enzymes and clearance by the kidneys.
MGF, the non-PEGylated form, is naturally expressed in muscle tissue. It plays a role in muscle repair and growth after injury or exercise by stimulating muscle stem cell (satellite cell) activity and protein synthesis. PEG-MGF is designed to mimic these effects with an extended duration of action due to its PEGylation. It is primarily studied for its potential in muscle recovery and growth, particularly in contexts involving muscle damage or sarcopenia. While MGF itself is a natural component of the body's response to muscle activity, PEG-MGF is a synthetically modified compound for research and therapeutic exploration (Source: PubChem, DrugBank).
