Pentosan Polysulfate (PPS) is a semi-synthetic sulfated polysaccharide, derived from beechwood hemicellulose. It is chemically related to heparin but with significantly lower anticoagulant activity. PPS has been primarily studied for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and tissue-protective properties, particularly in conditions affecting the bladder. It is available in both oral and injectable forms, though its approved uses vary by region and formulation. In the United States, an oral formulation of pentosan polysulfate sodium is approved for the treatment of bladder pain and discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as bladder pain syndrome (BPS). Other potential applications, such as for osteoarthritis, are under investigation but remain experimental (PubChem, DrugBank).
