Overview

Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral, meaning it is required in small amounts for normal bodily functions. It is naturally present in many foods and is available as a dietary supplement. The human body does not synthesize molybdenum; therefore, it must be obtained through diet. Its primary role in the body involves acting as a cofactor for several enzymes. These enzymes are critical for the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids, the detoxification of certain compounds, and the proper function of various metabolic pathways. Specifically, molybdenum is a component of four human enzymes: sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component (mARC). Sulfite oxidase is crucial for converting sulfite to sulfate, a necessary step in the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. Without adequate sulfite oxidase activity, sulfites can accumulate, potentially leading to adverse neurological effects. Xanthine oxidase plays a role in the metabolism of purines, converting xanthine to uric acid. Aldehyde oxidase is involved in the metabolism of various heterocyclic compounds and aldehydes, including those from drugs and toxins. The mARC enzymes are involved in the detoxification of N-hydroxylated compounds. (National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, PubChem)
