Overview

Celecoxib, marketed under the brand name Celebrex, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation. It belongs to a class of NSAIDs known as COX-2 selective inhibitors. Unlike traditional NSAIDs which inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, celecoxib predominantly targets the COX-2 enzyme. This selectivity is intended to reduce certain gastrointestinal side effects often associated with non-selective NSAIDs, such as stomach ulcers and bleeding. Celecoxib is prescribed for various conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute pain, and primary dysmenorrhea. It is taken orally, typically once or twice daily, and is available by prescription only. (Mayo Clinic, FDA label)
