Overview

Lixisenatide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist, a class of medications used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a synthetic analog of human GLP-1, a natural incretin hormone. GLP-1 is released from the intestines in response to food intake and plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism. Lixisenatide was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2016 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is administered via subcutaneous injection. Early research also explored its potential role in weight management due to its effects on appetite and gastric emptying (FDA label, DrugBank).

Known interactions

  • Category rule: glp1 × supplement
    Note

GLP-1 medications slow stomach emptying, changing how/when oral supplements absorb; rapid weight loss raises the importance of protein and micronutrients.

Time oral supplements when nausea is lowest; prioritize protein and micronutrients; discuss with your provider.
