Overview

Levocetirizine, also commonly known as Xyzal, is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It is the (R)-enantiomer of cetirizine. As a second-generation antihistamine, it is designed to be less sedating than older, first-generation antihistamines while still effectively managing allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and itching. Levocetirizine works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It is available over-the-counter and by prescription in various forms, including tablets and oral solutions. (MedlinePlus, PubChem)
