Overview

Tamoxifen, often marketed under the brand name Nolvadex, is a medication primarily used to treat and prevent certain types of breast cancer. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). For breast cancer, tamoxifen is indicated for estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer. It works by blocking the effects of estrogen in breast tissue, which can help stop the growth of ER-positive cancer cells. Its use extends to both early-stage and advanced breast cancer, as well as for reducing the risk of breast cancer in high-risk individuals. Tamoxifen is an oral medication, typically taken once or twice daily. (Source: FDA label, DrugBank)
