Serrapeptase, also known as serratiopeptidase, is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the *Enterobacteriaceae* bacterium, *Serratia marcescens*. This bacterium was originally found in the intestine of the silkworm, *Bombyx mori*, where the enzyme plays a role in dissolving the silkworm's cocoon. Serrapeptase has been investigated for its potential anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing properties, primarily due to its ability to break down proteins. It is available as a dietary supplement and has been studied for various conditions, including post-operative swelling, sinusitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome, though the extent of its efficacy and safety in all contexts is still under active research (PubChem).
