Overview
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic sulfur-containing compound found in plants, animals, and humans. It is sometimes referred to as dimethyl sulfone. As a dietary supplement, MSM is commonly marketed for its potential to support joint health, reduce inflammation, and enhance recovery. It is a metabolite of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and an oxidized product of dimethyl sulfide (DMS).
Sulfur is a crucial element for many biological processes, forming part of amino acids like methionine and cysteine, which are fundamental building blocks of proteins. It is also involved in the formation of connective tissues, enzymes, and antioxidants such as glutathione. While naturally present in small amounts in some foods, including certain fruits, vegetables, grains, and beverages, the concentration in most foods is often reduced during cooking and processing.
